CBC ‘BACK 2 SCHOOL’ BLOOD DRIVE IS FRIDAY & SATURDAY

August 26, 2020

DAYTON, Ohio - Back 2 School Donation Days" at the Dayton Community Blood Center are both Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29 as CBC faces a critical need for blood, with an acute shortage of types O-positive and A-positive.

CBC must boost the weekend blood supply and is also encouraging more community members to donate as the new school year begins with multiple high school blood drive cancellations.

Everyone who registers to donate Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dayton CBC Donation Center, 349 S. Main St. will receive a free "COVID Care" pack that includes the new "We Are All In This Together" face mask, a travel bottle of hand sanitizer, and the "Time to Save a Life" t-shirt.

Donors must make an appointment and wear a face mask. Schedule your donation at www.DonorTime.com or call (937) 461-3220.

CBC depends on Friday blood collections because of fewer blood drives on Saturdays and no blood collections on Sundays. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Friday was the most popular day for high school blood drives.

The 2020 school year is beginning with many school districts opting for remote learning or limited in-person classes. Schools are putting strict limits on activities, including high school blood drives.

Last year more than 17 percent of CBC's blood collections came from high school blood drives. A disproportionate 55 percent of CBC's first-time donors came from high school blood drives.

The early closing of school last March cancelled 47 high school blood drives, resulting in 3,615 fewer donors and about 1,400 fewer first-time donors compared to the previous school year.

CBC is encouraging communities to work with their local high schools to sponsor community blood drives where students can participate.  Students can still qualify for the CBC Red Cord Honor Program by registering to donate at community blood drives or the Dayton CBC Donation Center.

CBC asks all community members to help offset the loss of high school blood drives by supporting your community blood drives and donating more often.

Blood donation requirements:  Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name.  Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card.  Donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 years old with parental consent: form available at www.givingblood.org or at CBC branch & blood drive locations), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds (you may have to weigh more, depending on your height), and be in good physical health.  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes blood donor eligibility guidelines periodically.  Individuals with eligibility questions are invited to email canidonate@cbccts.org. Make an appointment at www.DonorTime.com or call (937) 461-3220.
