DEMAND FOR COVID-19 CONVALESCENT PLASMA REACHES ALL-TIME HIGH

November 10, 2020

DAYTON, Ohio - Hospital use of COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma (CCP) for the treatment of crucially ill coronavirus patients is at a new high and Community Blood Center is in urgent need of COVID-19 survivors to donate. Potential CCP donors can learn more and register to donate at www.GivingBlood.org or call (937) 461-3220.

Usage reached an all-time last week. CBC shipped 239 units to area hospitals for the highest number of CCP transfusions since CBC launched Ohio's first CCP collection program in early April. CBC remains in critical need of CCP units in all blood types.

The antibody-rich plasma from people who have recovered from the coronavirus is vital for the treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients. CBC is now testing all blood donors for COVID-19 antibodies with the hope this will help identify more people eligible to donate convalescent plasma.

CBC is also seeking sponsors for CCP blood drives, particularly in areas that experienced outbreaks of COVID-19 and have access to qualified CCP donors.

"We need organizations in known hot spots who will allow us to set up CCP drives and encourage their members, students, or employees to donate," said CBC Donor Relations Director Tracy Morgan. "The only way to collect the plasma needed is to establish CCP blood drives across our entire service area."

Potential CCP donors must have tested positive for COVID-19 by the RNA test or tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies by blood test and must be completely recovered. All CCP donors will receive the "COVID-19 Crisis Warrior" t-shirt.

WHY CBC HAS A CRITICAL NEED FOR CCP

  • A surge in regional hospital usage of CCP during the week of Nov. 2 depleted CBC's on-hand supply of CCP. CBC shipped 258 CCP units, with 92% going to regional hospitals.

  • During the week of Nov. 2 CBC reached a new high of 53 CCP donors, including 23 first-time donors.  CBC's greatest challenge to CCP collection is identifying and recruiting more CCP donors.

  • From April 6 through Nov. 9 CBC has shipped 2,203 doses of CCP (1,907 to local hospitals, 296 doses to blood centers outside the region). When local collections run short CBC must look to blood centers outside the region to request CCP units to meet local demand.

FACTS ABOUT CCP USAGE:

  • One CCP donation can usually be divided into 3 doses.

  • Depending on severity of their illness and response to treatment some patients may receive two or more doses.

  FACTS ABOUT CCP DONATIONS:

  • Because of the immediate need, CCP donors are permitted to donate once per week with a maximum of eight donations in three months. (The normal plasma guideline is one donation every four weeks).

  • Potential CCP donors must have tested positive for COVID-19 by the RNA swab test or tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies by blood test and must be completely recovered. (Symptom free for 28 days).

  • Go to www.GivingBlood.org to find out more about CCP donations and to register to donate, or call (937) 461-3220.
