Residents are urged to donate blood in honor of their favorite high school football team during the annual Piqua – Troy Blood Drive Challenge on Monday, October 19 at the US Bank branch in Piqua and Thursday, October 22 at the US Bank branch in Troy. This is the 12th time US Bank and Community Blood Center have hosted the Troy - Piqua Blood Drive Challenge, capitalizing on the friendly competition between the two communities to help boost blood donations. The Troy-Piqua rivalry is the oldest football rivalry in the state.
In the Blood Drive Challenge, Piqua leads Troy by winning seven times to Troy’s one victory. Troy won in 1998. Piqua won in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. 2001 was declared a draw.
US Bank will award $1,000 in educational materials and equipment to the winning community’s high school. Donors will vote at the time of registration to determine the winner of this year’s Blood Drive Challenge.
“US Bank is pleased to assist in this community endeavor. With the great spirit and long-standing rivalry between these two great communities, we aspire to help Community Blood Center. In this competition, everyone comes home a winner, especially those patients whose well-being depends on the availability of life-sustaining blood.” stated Diana Davis, US Bank District Manager.
“Community Blood Center is appreciative for the support of US Bank,” said Jodi Minneman, Chief Operating Officer for Community Blood Center. “US Bank has shown civic leadership in helping Community Blood Center encourage blood donations through this vital and fun event. And we’d like to thank those donors who have supported this Blood Drive Challenge for the past eleven years.”
The winning community will be announced prior to the start of the Troy – Piqua game on Friday, October 23, 2009 at Troy Football Stadium. Serving as ambassadors for each community will be Ron Phillis, Troy High School Principal and Kathy Davisson, Piqua High School Principal. The ambassador representing the winning community will accept the “Blood Drive Challenge” trophy and have it displayed at their school until next year’s competition.
