FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 3, 2009
DAYTON, OH (November 3, 2009) — Community Blood Center (CBC) urges healthy donors to consider making a blood donation at this time and reminds donors that they can donate without delay following vaccination. Blood donations in October were down about 300 pints or 4% compared with the same time last year. CBC attributes the decline to illness and seeks to remind the public:
S The need for blood does not take a break even in the midst of cold and flu season.
S Donors may donate after getting a flu vaccine! Donors who receive either the nasal or the injection of the seasonal or H1N1 flu vaccine are immediately eligible to donate.
S Platelet donors are especially needed at this time. Platelets are collected through automated donation (a.k.a. apheresis), a process during which only platelets are collected and the other blood components are returned to the donor.
S Donors must be free of all cold and flu symptoms, including a lingering cough, for at least a week prior to presenting to donate.
S Donors who develop symptoms of a cold or flu within 24 hours of donation should call CBC at 800.388.GIVE or 937.461.3450 to report their illness.
